newsN1 user guide
How do I use this service?
You can choose more than one use of our service. Today, we see three different use models, yet the tool looks quite interesting, and, most likely, there may be more use models to it even now.
First, you can use the rule builder to simply build a news feed according to your personal interests and read it. You will have to choose a series of source media that will contribute news to your news feed and filter it through tags and key words. If the news source you are looking for is not found in our palette, you could try adding it on your own. We cannot guarantee any success, but it is worth trying anyway. Besides, the list of source media that we propose is growing constantly. You do not have to build a "from-scratch" rule for a start. Instead, you may open any of the recommended news feeds and move it to your account, then you can change the configuration rules at will.
Second, you could build a news feed knowing that you will not be the only person to read it. The feed may be also viewed by a number of people who will have it's link from you. More important, these people do not necessarily have to be registered with our service: they can view your news feed through a web-browser or RSS-reader via the direct link. In the nearest future we plan to enable sending the feed via e-mail as a widget that may be inserted into any website.
Third, you can post any news of your own or any other notes that will be visible in your personal news source feed, since every user of our service becomes a news source. Your source medium will be directly available to your social network friends who also use our service in association with their SNS profile. In addition, you can duplicate your post in the social network immediately after posting. Another option is that you can add your source media into any news feed, adjust the right filters and give it out to other people as part of the news feed containing news authorized by you among other news on the matter of interest.
- What do you call source media?
Source media is any regular news generator.
The most obvious source media are the traditional news sites. A blog may also be a source medium. If you make your posts regularly, you might as well become a source medium.
- What is a tag?
Tag is an unambiguously formulated term used for clear classification (categorization) of things. We use tags for classifying the news. In our case, tag classification is always determined by the news source.
The tag may be one word ("economics", "bitcoin") or a short phrase ("Richard Branson", "military science").
- What is the difference between the tag and keyword?
In our case, tag classification is defined by the news source, and the keyword classification is defined by the recipient. Then, as a consequence, keyword classification is always open for the user and thus less strict than tag classification.
- How do I link the newsN1 account with my Facebook profile?
Enter your profile, press the Facebook icon and log into Facebook. Your profile will be linked to your Facebook account, provided that you had registered with a password initially.
By the way, it is totally the same with VK.com.
- I began to use the application via VK.com, so how do I get the website login password?
Easily. Enter your application profile and change your password. With the new password (using the same e-mail as for VK.com), you can log in newsN1 via the web without SNS.
It works the same for Facebook.
- Can I post anything in Facebook or VK.com via newsN1?
Yes, provided that your profile is linked to your social networks profiles in which you would like to duplicate your post. If the profiles are linked to each other, the posting form will suggest that you tick the checkboxes for duplicating your post in Facebook and VK.com.
- How many news feeds can I have?
It is up to you. The only limit is how you can manage them all.
Our initial idea was that the user might create a news feed to know something important before breakfast, another one - for reading hi-tech news during lunchtime, the third one - for reposting things on the personal website, etc.
- What are the advantages of the premium account?
For now, the premium account only frees your feeds from advertising. In future, the premium functionality will expand faster than the free functionality. We have plenty of ideas.
- How do I tag-filter the news?
For the news source already in the source media list, press Edit Source icon, select the right tag in Tag Search field, and either move it to the inclusion tag list with the + icon or the exclusion tag list with the - icon.
- What overrides the feed: the inclusion or exclusion rules?
You can say that the exclusion rules are stronger: with the same keyword entered into both the inclusion and exclusion rules, the news which contains the said word will be kept out of the news feed.
- How do you store my personal data?
We do not work with personal data. An e-mail account is not personal data, you can also select any nick for registration. Thus, any legal restrictions in this field do not apply to us in any way.
- Where are your physical servers?
Our physical servers are located in Denmark and the Netherlands.
Why so? It just happened this way quite naturally.
- How can I make my news visible for peers?
To have your social network peers see your newsN1 posts, it is quite sufficient that your profile is linked to at least one of SNS profiles in which you have friends who also use newsN1. In such case, they will view you as a news source in the source media palette, in the Friends tab.
- How can I show one of my full news feeds to the friends?
You can see Share News Feed button on the button panel to the left of each news feed. If you copy the link from the button and send it to your peer in any way, such peer can also see the news feed following that link. What is more important, they will not need to log in newsN1.
- Can I view my news feeds with an RSS-reader?
Yes, each news feed has a direct RSS link. You can find it in the button panel on the left. Copy it and view your news feed with an RSS-reader.
By the way, not only can you view the feed by yourself, but you can also share it with peers.
- What is the difference between the open and closed news feeds?
The closed news feed has a token, i.e. an unauthorized person cannot view it, unless they have access to it from you. The open news feed does not have a token. That means that any person can see it knowing just its number.
- Why do I need a news feed?
For instance, you have a website with a news feed and you want your posts to be duplicated in your SNS group. Or, say, you do not have a website but you have news for a certain circle of readers, and once a week you post the original news and you borrow them from the topically alike websites all the other time.
- I would like to receive the news from my news feed at my mail. How do I do that?
That is a very good question. We do not offer such option right now, but it will surely be there in the closest future. This means you will be able to receive notices at your e-mail account from the news feeds chosen.
- Why do the news feeds need the evaluation tags?
A "like" is not enough for us. There are quite a few options by which you can evaluate a post, and our option is such. We will introduce more interesting functions for such evaluation very soon.
- I would like to connect source media which are absent from your lists. How?
Enter the feed filters, select My Sources tab, select Add Source option and follow the instructions. However, if your source media do not have an RSS-feed we will not be able to help you currently.
By the way, the source list is constantly expanding.
- I think I know a news source that you might be interested in. How do I insert it into the common palette?
Connect it as your source and write us using the feedback form. Or just use the feedback form and explain to us, why you think that such news source will be interesting not just for you.
- Why does my source list show some peers and does not show other?
There may be two answers: either they do not use our service yet, or they have not linked their profile in our service with the SNS profile where you friend. By the way, you may prompt them to do so.
- May I connect my Facebook posts as sources? How about VK.com posts?
Not yet. But we hope, this option will be there in the foreseeable future. Most probably, it will arrive earlier for VK.com than for Facebook.
- When can I expect Android and iOS applications?
Though we expect that our news feeds may be viewed in the web from mobile devices, we realize the importance of special mobile applications, the more so that we have some functionality ideas for them. You can expect them by 2016. Earlier for iOS and a little later for Android.
- Why do you never have pictures for the latest news?
The news collection algorithm has three runs. All of them work at a certain interval in order not to overload the servers. The titles and brief texts are collected at the first run, and the pictures - at the second. So, the latest news are shown without pictures.
- Does the search work with the word forms?
Yes, it does, but don't expect miracles from morphology: "Greece" and "Greek" are still two different words.
- Why are only Russian and English available?
Because these are the closest to us. If the application is at least a little popular, the list of language options will be surely expanded. And please do not ask us when we will add Chinese.
- Is it just another news aggregator?
No, it is not just another news aggregator. Yes, we collect the news and suggest functions that are intrinsic to the conventional aggregators, but this is not where our service ends. We develop the classification and processing mechanisms that rather pertain to totally different systems, not simple aggregators. For instance, one of the targets is working with semantics.
- I have received an error message. What do I do with that?
It depends on the message. If it says you entered something wrong, try to re-enter it right. But if you see a lot of weird words, please copy the message into the feedback form (unless you are too lazy to do so), describe how you received it and send it back to us for correction.
